SURESHOT MAGAZINE
She may live in L.A., but gilli moon is an outback girl. Raised in rural Australia, she’s got an ethos of self-reliance that was forged in her parents’ solar-powered house at the edge of the bush, and that pioneering spirit has served her just as well in the wilds of Hollywood. Since settling in America in 1997, this Renaissance woman has launched a spirited assault on the corporate entertainment industry and carved a multi-faceted niche for herself that defies categorization. “I’m the leader of my vision,” she declares—and she’s got a record label, a successful recording and performing career, a how-to book for independent artists, and a growing contingent of fans to prove it. LOOSEYLUCY'S HEADQUARTERS
It's an exciting era for independent artists. In the past, as well as the present, multi-national corporations controlled mass media and pop music. They have done so before and they always will. There will always be some powerhouse company, or three, in control. It goes back to feudal days. There will always be the need for quick "hits" for music and "big opening weekends" for movies as it's motivated by money, by power and by business. The music business is about business. It's not really about music at all. Don't be sad about this. It is what it is, and I guess many artists choose this path thinking that this is the only way to be heard. They waste years waiting around hoping to be discovered by a company, and spend their working lives constantly proving themselves. Most give up, or are tossed aside. But the path I prefer to talk about is called the self-empowerment path. An interview with Mary Lemanski. Read the interview

Interview with gilli moon: REAL AUSTRALIAN "SURVIVOR" MAKES HER MARK ON MUSIC INDUSTRY
by Athena Schaffer, U.S.A

Dreams of stardom are elusive even to lifelong residents of "music industry cities" such as New York, Los Angeles, or Nashville. But imagine having that dream sparked while growing up in the Australian wilderness. The cards would seem to be stacked against that person. But Australia's Gilli Moon did just that, and beat the odds.

Warrior Girl Becomes A Woman
Life on the road is obviously constantly full of surprises for gilli moon. But then, she's also gone from being an aspiring young singer songwriter from a little NSW country town to being an established artist and performer in Los Angeles from where she not only regularly tours around much of the US through the year but writes and records music for her own CDs as well as for television and film. And she's done it all independently. No wonder she has the confidence to pull off a solo gig in a death metal club.

MX, MELBOURNE
"Staying Home" with performer gilli moon

Q. Mixing music with art is a concept you've been credited with starting. What inspires you?
A. Expressionist painting had always been a private passion until my bass player suggested I sell some of my paintings on tour. I thought I'd take it a step further and bring a glass canvas on stage and add an extra visual dimension to the performance while there's a guitar solo.

Q. Can you see it becoming a trend here?
A. Music needs to be entertaining. I think just watching a band perform can become a little boring after a while. That's why bands have been using video images on huge screens. In Hollywood now, DJs are having artists draw while the music is spinning.

Q. You've been compared to Madonna, Ani DiFranco, Jackson Pollock, The Rolling Stones and Tori Amos. How do you view such comparisons?
A. I'm flattered. Being a bit of a chameleon, I like to be viewed in different ways. All those people bring an aspect of performance into their art and cross boundaires.

Q. You've created an indie record label and use the Net to great effect. Do you think you could have achieved the same success from scratch in Australia?
A. I needed to get out. America is challenging and LA is an epicentre for change. Everyone you meet professes to being able to make you a star, but it didn't take long to realise anyone can make it so long as they work hard and remain true to themselves and their art.

Q. What can we expect from your seminar and live show?
A. I'll be sharing my experiences about marketing and promotion, then there will be a half-hour set on the piano. (About the Espy, Melbourne 19th Dec 2002 gig)

INPRESS MAGAZINE, Melbourne

"Moon Shines"

Expat poly-media artist gilli moon is set to rise again in her home country. Anthony Horan goes star-gazing.

Defiantly independent in everything she does, trans-Pacific citizen gilli moon has just released her third album, an accessible yet adventurous set of songs recorded with her Los Angeles based band. But this is one artist who's not content to simply get up on stage and play songs, then head for a recording studio to get them on tape. When not being gilli moon, rock performer, she's taking on painting, writing articles and a just-released book, doing motivational seminars and running a record lable. Oh, and she also wins the occasional award. Back in Australia for a couple of rare performances, gilli got on the phone from her second home in the Hunter Valley to explain how one woman can be so many things at the same time.

You're originally from Australia, now based in Los Angeles?
That's right - I'm from Sydney, and grew up in the inner city, though when I was about fourteen I moved to the Hunter Valley, which is more of an isolated bush area. And then I went to LA about five years ago.

So you're music career started in Australia, then?
The very first record that I made was done here, called Girl In The Moon - and I never released it. It was kind of my calling card overseas. Subsequently, through time, people have really wanted to hear those songs, because I play them live, so I'm going to do a release of it at some stage. My second album
Tempermamental Angel I released early last year both here and in the States, and now I've just brought out Woman, my third release.

On the new album you've done a cover version of INXS's Need You Tonight - why?
For several reasons. Firstly, I've always wanted to do a song in memory of Michael. Secondly, I'm an Australian, so I guess as part of my homesickness I thought it would be great to do. But mainly, I've loved that song for a long time, and it fitted into the concept of Woman well. I like to do concept albums. Temperamental Angel was like a rebellious teenager, going through emotions and angst. Woman was more about me growing up, being a woman and dealing with relationships, and how we should all relate to each other. Need You Tonight's lyrics talk about being very honest and open with how you feel about somebody, and that's what I wanted to bring into the album."

Your music gets categorised in the US as "Adult Alternative", but there's a definite pop element to it...
With my songs, the structure is pop -  I like to write a good song that everyone can sing along to and relate to. But in the production side of things I like to make it a little quirky and different. That's why I go a little bit left of field, especially when I'm on stage. It's almost performance art. We've got a six-piece band in LA and we go off - it's full on. And then it goes really quiet when I do something on the piano.

You paint on stage as well, don't you?
I do - I call it
SensuArt. I use plexiglass as a canvas, and every time I want to get off the piano or I'm singing out the front of the stage and there's a guitar solo, I'll go off and paint. It just adds a different dimension to the show.

You're also described as a motivational speaker...
I'm just starting to get into that. It was just because I wrote this book, "I AM A Professional Artist". I was invited in LA to do seminars for songwriters, about one hundred to two hundred songwriters at a time, about doing it the indie way. From that I've springboarded into doing seminars on that subject.

PASADENA WEEKLY
WARRIOR GIRL - Gilli Moon defines the prize of success - Millions of girls prance around the house with fantasies of making like Madonna on screens and stages worldwide. The brutally challenging journey toward achieving that goal defeats most, however, and they move on to less public endeavors. But for Australian pop artist Gilli Moon, the journey IS the goal.
