ORANGE COUNTY METRO
From OC’s Gilli Moon to a surprising Tommy Lee.
(4 stars)
After nearly three years on the road promoting her most recent record, Australian transplant Gilli Moon submerged herself in a Los Angeles studio for more than a year to record her fourth album,
extraOrdinary life. It’s hard to classify this collection of autobiographical songs and
stories that collectively paint an extraordinary tapestry of sound. Electronic drum loops and grooves create the frame within which Gilli paints pictures with words she passionately delivers with a voice that is both technically excellent and
emotionally transparent. Bizarre sounds and electronic plug-ins and effects bring surprises and add to the magic without overpowering the organic feel of the record. Live musicians make the album beat with humanity. Additionally, this enhanced CD
features a 10-minute behind-the-scenes “Making of the Video,” and a 20-photo slide show embracing the album. A very worthy purchase from a mover and shaker in the indie music scene. ~ by

LOOSEYLUCY'S HEADQUARTERS
While you can hear a hint of Tori Amos influence to her music, Gilli Moon
does not fit into the mold of the typical female singer/pianist. Her
auto-biographical, extraOrdinary life, is a testament to her life thus
far and a showcase of her own groovy style of alternative/R&B music. The
production is excellent, and the songs are beautifully arranged. Gilli even
picks up the didgeridoo, beat boxes, and sings a version of her song, "Bye Is
Such A Lonely Word" in Italian. Album highlights include a spoken word
piece, "Deconstruction," the catchy "Evolution," "Little Boy Lost," and the
pop/surf-influenced, "The Wind." The enhanced CD format has a video with
interview, live performance, and music video clips as well as a slideshow
featuring pictures and music of Gilli. extraOrdinary life is possibly
one of the best independently released albums of late 2005.

"Every so often an
artist exceeds expectations. They create a piece of work that is so
exquisite, it’s breathtaking. gilli moon has taken that quantum leap with
her latest album,
extraOrdinary life. It’s an epic endeavor from an artist
already well known for her independent and adventurous spirit. Indeed,
this album covers a wide range of styles and emotions that touch every
aspect of our lives. Though reviewers, as well as fans, will probably
mention comparisons to Tori Amos, Sting and Radiohead, Moon has instilled
this record with such a strong sense of self that one gets the impression
she’s letting us in on her secret life – an extraordinary one at that.
Starting with the title track, Moon takes listeners on a remarkable
journey through exotic and unpredictable soundscapes. With songs such as
“Release Me,” “Evolution,” “Bye Is Such A Lonely Word,” and the
unforgettable “Hollywood,” she has stacked this album with enough hit
material to get her plenty of attention. Though, at times, the scope of
her vision is challenging, it's always compelling; and, Moon’s vocals have
never been better. What’s most surprising, however, is her preternatural
ability to make her lyrics intimate yet universal. In fact, this body of
work reaches the ultimate level of craftsmanship with “Enchanted Forest”
and “My Extraordinary Life” expanding the boundaries of songwriting as we
know it.
This is an album that is best heard in its entirety. Not because
of any overall concept, but rather because
it’s a beautiful expedition of emotions and stories that comfort, excite
and inspire. Indeed, after hearing the songs presented on this record, you
wouldn’t be faulted if “you” also wanted to lead - an extraordinary life."

It’s been six years since I first discovered and
reviewed gilli moon’s amazing self-titled debut, “Girl in the Moon.”
Since then, I’ve given four stars to her 2000 disc, “Temperamental
Angel” and 2002 release, “Woman.” It’s amazing to me that with her
fourth CD -- and another four-star outing -- moon is still releasing
her always-evocative, ever-exciting work on an independent label that
she formed herself (and has since released several discs on by other
artists as well). An amazing creative force, both as a singer and
songwriter, gilli moon ought to be in the big leagues by now, touring
with the likes of Alanis and Tori Amos, instead of still grinding
along on the coffeehouse circuit. Nevertheless, she IS thankfully
recording and making music, because it is a rare treat to listen to a
CD with the color, emotion and depth of
extraOrdinary life The 15-song disc opens with its title track, where she
invites the listener in to celebrate with her the journey that is her
“extraordinary life.” It’s a tour de force of moon’s extraordinary
musical talents – the song opens with a low, cool sinuous bass and
contemplative vocal, and slowly builds, the textures broadening and
increasing in energy until by the end, there’s a wall of pounding
piano, crunchy guitar, belting backup vocals and an amazing feeling of
… positivity, victory, as moon sings of the things she’s learned on
her journey: “between the black and the white/I find clarity.” In
“Hollywood,” she crafts a beautifully taut “missing you” ballad about
her personal deal with the devil (she was born in Italy and grew up in
Australia but these days spends most of her time in L.A. building her
career). The song is dominated by a gently percussive piano as she
sings of being away from the one you love in order to succeed at the
goals of your life: “So I landed in Hollywood…she sings, “I dreamed
all of these years, and worked through my fears/to be the best I can
be…but my inward heart is torn apart…I don’t wanna be wasting my
time/without you by my side/in Hollywood.” Then in “Evolution,” she switches to a
percussive acoustic guitar strut as she sings about the difference
between one’s private self, and public persona (“I’m a riot in my own
living room,” she notes). One of the disc’s standout tracks comes in “Circus of
Life,” a pounding bass-dominated track about moving down life’s road
without slowing and settling down. “I don’t wanna die in the
suburbs,” she sings, extolling the virtues of roaming the skies and
the seas in search of new experience (“life’s gift is improvisation,”
she sings). Another perfect ballad comes in the salsa percussion
and Spanish guitar strains of the gorgeous “Bye is Such a Lonely
Word,” which she reprises at the end of the disc sung in her native
Italian. She strums out an upbeat acoustic guitar anthem in “We
Can Work It Out” and then takes a big risk in “Deconstruction,” a
spoken word piece with ambient background music. The risk pays off,
because while spoken word poetry can often sound too precious and
pretentious, this piece is both personal and universal, as moon
admits, “I’m feeling tender in my convictions” and asks “can there be
two hearts that beat like one?” She goes on to invite her listeners
into her world, noting “many paths I’ve traveled many roads have led
me here…I’ve lived a thousand years and spoken with devils and
angels…” and “Past, present, future it’s one delicious glass of
wine…jump into my extra ordinary, extraordinary life.” The disc hits its key message and most upbeat rocking
track in the penultimate “The Wind,” where she sings “I’ll take it as
it comes” atop a rollicking bass and squalling horns, in a
head-bobbing frenzy of Spanish rhythm and personal affirmation. If you’ve never heard of gilli moon, it’s high time you
did. You won’t see her bringing her piano and seductively personal
vocal stylings to the Tweeter Center this year, but she ought to be.
She is the real deal – a consummate poet, performer, and songstress.

COLLECTED SOUNDS
I've reviewed two of Gilli Moon's previous albums and am happy to note
that this new one is good too. It's more radio-friendly and groove-oriented
than the others. The opener "My Extraordinary Life" gets us in the mood with
a slinky groove and a cool vocal. "Between the black and the white I find
clarity" she sings. The reflective "Hollywood" reminds me of an in-tune
Madonna. "Evolution" is an inspired track with a special melody and odd
instrumental touches. The soulful and yearning "Spaceship" is mystical and
sophisticated. The scope of this record is wider than anything Moon has done
before and she seems to be leading an extraordinary life.

What
is it about
gilli
moon? Here she is with a new record after the exceptional
diversity and success of “Temperamental
Angel” and it’s almost like
Angel
came out just last week. But no – it’s been more than a year now and I
am at a loss as to how good “Woman”,
on
gilli’s
own
Warrior
Girl Music label,
really is. Reading
my review of
Angel,
I could probably just cut and paste that across to this one. But no, I will
resist the temptation and, like
gilli,
come up with something new. The record progresses like one of those 1970s
concept albums… it has a prologue “Real
– The Opening Ceremony” and an epilogue “Home,”
it celebrates
gilli’s
femininity by roaring I Am (A) Woman and effortlessly moves as many emotions
and genres as there are images and effigies of the woman herself. It’s
a credit to anyone who can uproot themselves as
gilli
did all those years ago and, after the success she so richly deserves, to
still maintain the artistic ingenuity, indie street-cred and seriously good music making
ideas instead of letting the so-called
City
of Angels sucked them out of her like so many other artists (music or
otherwise) who have found themselves on the wrong side of the Pacific. It rocks heavily, it
sways gently, it even has a short
John
Cage-esque
moment to keep you guessing.
gilli
moon
is a wonderful artist – musically and otherwise. Anyone who has been privy
to
a
live performance (alas – I am but one of the unlucky ones who have
not) will be able to support this claim, as will anyone who has any of her
other records (even the one she doesn’t talk about). Hopefully, these words
won’t
be needed to sell this record, as it will move itself. “Woman”
through
Warrior
Girl Music: to label it with a mere star-rating would be an
injustice…

singer-musician-poet-painter is going to be a superstar, at least she should
be, and TE readers can claim her as their own. Moon may reside in Los
Angeles but she grew up in the Wollombi Valley. This, her second album, is
as multi-faceted as the title suggests. Moon exposes her soul on this record
and what a wondrous soul she is. Confident one minute and fragile the next,
she swells with sensuality while striding between Kate Bush-inspired pop,
rock and jazz. Moon strips down a cover of the INXS hit Need You Tonight
that will leave you breathless.. or breathing heavy.

The 18 tracks on this, her second album show
diversity, ranging from moody acoustic pieces to energised electro
remixes, and Moon's vocal versatility is evident as she adapts to the
varying styles with apparent ease. She defines a sonic space that is all
her own on the haunting second track I'm Calling You, as well as on her
sensual interpretation of the INXS classic I Need You Tonight. As the
title would suggest, the lyrical content touches predominantly on
feminine issues, stretching from sexuality to self empowerment. - Steve

introspective "girl and a piano" songs like its intro,
"Real" where she asks "why do I need a man to make me feel

"Woman," and the throbbing synth come-on "Naked" (a
track revamped from her last disc). There's the unstoppably coy "Do

the Rhythm." There's a sinuous funky grind in "I'm Calling
You" and an almost dirge-slow run-through of INXS' "Need You

"Organic" and the delicate big ballad "To Be With

Dreams
Never End
I
guess it´s the first time we have to deal with an artist who has been
compared to Jackson Pollock, the painter and perhaps it is the first time
(well not really....) we are dealing with such a strong album! But let's
begin with the begin... Warrior Girl Music is the label set up by Gilli
Moon and you don't have to be an expert to understand what's it all
about...this is a sort of tribute for women who did their own thing in
rock. Not the kind of spirit from women who decide it´s time to raise a
fist as feminism in rock isn´t needed simply as here in my collection I
have tons of female artists and I can only say : feminists already started
from the 70´s...how else can I see artists like Kate Bush or Carly Simon?
But good, let's call "Woman" a sort of tribute or celebration
for any woman around who did something. Gilli was raised up around the
town of Sidney and from the moment she discovered that Gilli is
Aboriginal-dialect for "moon" it was clear why this woman was
going to be known under Gili Moon in the future...a name that would be
used for her further career in LOs Angeles cos that's where she actually
lives now. "Vive La Independence" says Gilli cos for her
(just as for so many other artists) the internet was a the
ultimate way to build her emporium and with success, in Gilli Moon´s biog
there was a whole page about prices she has received (too many to mention)
and then there is even the music...also too many genres to mention (which
we will do anyway) as Gilli is a real musical chameleon and I guess
that´s why she has been compared to David Bowie anyway... It goes from
genius discopop ("Woman" the titletrack brings you to the genius
discopopstuff Madonna did on "Ray Of Light"), intimistic intense
pianosongs in Tori Amosstyle (the piano was the basic for Gilli´s musical
training), femalesingersongwriterstuff in KD Lang-style or
on tracks like "I´m calling you" you hear original trip-hop....
Gilli Moon´s music and this album (which is the following up from
"Temperamental angel" is a real victory and the sort of middle
finger that can be best used towards the so called recordindustry who
knows it all... One of the strongest albums we ever have reviewed and as
that are more than thousands you know you have no reason not to dig Gilli
Moon....
SPOTLIGHT
USA
If you're not familiar with the music of
Gilli Moon, there's no better time
than right now to introduce yourself to what she has to offer. Her previous
release, "Temperamental Angel," was a SPOTLIGHT favorite. But, her
current
release, "Woman," is a thousand times better. She went all out with
this
one. There's just a wealth of material to be found here and there's a lot
to take in. There's pop, there's rock, there's just a little bit of
everything. I mean, as I went through each track, I heard stuff that
reminded me of Alanis Morissette, Cher, Tori Amos, Lucy Woodward and the
list goes on and on. The thing is though, she's got a sound that's totally
her own. This is probably the most exciting album you'll have the pleasure
of hearing this year. There's something on here for everyone and, well,
let's put it this way, I would go so far as to say this is a MUST HAVE
release. There's no question about it. There's no excuse to pass this one
up. So, be sure to check it out and, if you're lucky enough to catch Gilli Moon live, she's on tour with Monty Python's
Eric Idle. How's that for cool?

the first time I listened to this album I was hooked. I have listened to it so
many times I have driven everyone in the house mad. Gilli sings like an angel
with the strength of an opera diva. This CD features a fabulous cover of INXS
“Need You Tonight” as an ode to Michael Hutchence. The album oozes self
empowerment with titles like “I’m Calling You” and “I Think Of Him”.

Nancy Sinatra, Neneh Cherry and,
er, John Lennon have all
had a crack at the title. Woman is Australian singer-songwriter
Gilli Moon's stab at what it means, but don't expect the answer in stick
figures. "I'm not going to give u the mundane, same old tired
norm," she warns on her third LP. "I am a woman. I am complex. I
have many emotions, feelings, personalities." The album bristles with
them. It arrives on her own label, Warrior Girl Music, produced and mostly
played by herself. An atmospheric deconstruction of INXS's Need You
Tonight is the only tune not bearing her writing credit.
Like her kindred independent spirit Ani DiFranco,
self-determination is a big theme for Gilli Moon. Parallel with the album,
she's launching a book. titled I AM A Professional Artist: "an

ALLMUSIC.COM, U.S.A
Among the emerging post-bubblegum backlash of down-to-earth, in-your-face female singer/songwriters is attitudinal Aussie Gilli Moon. Her
self-produced Temperamental Angel deals with time and distance,
salvation and deception, solitude versus loneliness, and
all the other underlying themes of postmodern existence in
the big bad city. Moon is a singer/songwriter of the old
school. Her lyrics are intensely personal, her melodies
either guitar-driven or vocally driven. However, no vocal pyrotechnics
or acrobatics are on display; her voice is closer to Gwen Stefani
or even Janis Joplin than Tori Amos or Kate Bush. One gets the feeling
that the process of creating the album was as much a cathartic process
as a creative one. The results are engaging and thought provoking and very easy
to identify with. In the title track, Moon sings, "I'm a sucker
for conventional romance/And I've never truly experienced the chance/To
be treated like an angel." Definitely words that most women these days
can relate to. In "Plenty," Moon explores modern misconceptions and revelations about success and wealth, stating, "I'm heading
for the land of plenty...maybe if I look around I'll
recognize that I've arrived already." On tracks such
as "Swimming" and "Disgrace," one can imagine Moon gnashing her teeth in fury and despair. In "Time," she takes a
more detached, contemplative tone. One thing is blindingly
clear from the first time that one hears the album or
reads about its creator: Gilli Moon is in music for the
love of it, and she's in it for the long haul. - L. Katz AMG for

On her latest album, moon broadens the boundaries of musical structure and sonic
soundscapes with an approach that Patti Smith and Sonic Youth would

Gilli Moon delivers her
progressive pop/rock style with a unique diversity in style and expression. By
her creation, Gilli has allowed the listeners of her music to paint worlds of
imagery with their minds. Amazing songwriting and vocals that purr like a
kitten and growl like a lion. This music is powerful and presents a feeling of
awe. The lyrics are unlike any that I've heard from a pop artist, and tell me
that Gilli Moon is more about art and presenting her passions than creating
die cut pop songs. That being said, this music has a lot of mainstream pop
potential, but with a different kind of charm. I wouldn't mind hearing more
music of this nature taking over the mainstream. I prefer Gilli's more
intelligently written songs of the pop styles though. All in all, this is
music that you won't soon forget. It's definitely made it's mark here.

gilli moon doesn't like to capitalize on herself. Perhaps a small g & m is
proof of an upcoming star who doesn't want to inflate her ego now that she's
infiltrating Californialand. And an invasion it is. Having moved from
Australia where she studied classical piano and hit the stage in musicals like
The Wizard of Oz, after only a couple of years in CA, she's got a few songs in
films, has won awards, and has kicked open a slice of online presence for
herself that's winning her global fans as well.
One of the awards comes from The Netherlands Song Expo, where 'Plenty' won 1st
place. Good thing it's being sent around as one of the early singles from this
disc, because it Is a little bit of heaven. Strong guitar. A pop formula that
has worked well from Abba to McCartney, it is Instantly hot and memorable,
helped on by gilli's rather helpless girlie voice that just makes you want to
stand up to anyone who's pitting wits against her. 'flying, over oceans of
empty silence. floating in my dreams I'm my own innocence. will I find my
arrow where I aimed so high and mighty, and my dignity?' Yes.
There's something distinctly Bowie-driven about this one. Like listening to a
female Scary Monsters, with a dose more vulnerability and greater sound from
the backing players. gilli is a fine poet, everything stems from that growth.
'u don't control me, my creativity it's my own mystery your lack of synergy so
don't suck me into the vortex 'cause it's just sex and I'm tired of playing
games.' This is 'Disgrace', one more reason she's just a temperamental angel
in a down to earth world that doesn't believe in susceptible mindframes. The
music keeps pounding, the static cling floats thru this life, the electronic
hums seek out reception of a better terrestrial sphere.
'Why Do You Love Me Still?' is like listening to a beautiful, heartfelt
musical ballad sung on the fire escape, as an ambulance or something passes
for a few bars in the background. This one certainly proves that gilli would
be great in Rent, or maybe Jeckyl & Hyde. If she ever feels like taking a
pay cut, go to Broadway, girl. Or write your own show. Because Still is a
pleasure, drunk horns and all.
This moon blends like a peacock. You wonder at the beauty of all those colors,
but somehow, you couldn't imagine what she would look like without all musical
hues. Interesting, and utterly arresting.

Her talent is really showing
off on this CD. This album can easily be compared to the best works of Tori Amos
or Natalie Imbruglia. It's a very adventurous CD with a crystal clear production
by Evan J. Beigel and gilli moon. The strength of this CD is the variety. There
are firm, sharp rockers and sensuous ballads. The title track is a rocking mix
of Heather Nova and Kate Bush while "Plenty" is a stubborn kind of
fairytale rock with sharp guitar riffs and temperamental vocals.
"Disgrace" has some T.Rex influences with cutting and bubbling
synthesizers. A mean, bitchy song. The sensitive side of this temperamental
angel is to be heard on tracks such as the dreamy, sensual ballad
"Naked" with its lazy buzzing bass. Gilli sings "I like getting
naked with you" and who am I to disagree? "Time" is a light-funky
pop song, a potential hit record, mixing influences like Alanis Morrisette, INXS
and Crowded House into a hot funky track. "Swimming" is a Tori
Amos-alike piano ballad with lots of emotion. "Why Do You Love Me
Still?" features a very horny trombone solo. Some of the songs just settle
in your head and you walk around humming them for days. gilli moon deserves to
become just as big as the (sometimes) overrated Tori Amos.

Aussie export Gilli Moon was among the talent at the Lounge 88 with California guest Terri Di
Marco.
Between the vocals, keyboards and guitar, this duo
doesn't need any additional instrumentation to showcase
it's fundamental and obvious songwriting skills. Terri's
guitar work added some fabulous rhythm and active
melange with Gilli's smooth keyboard sounds. Gilli's
artsie "Temperamental Angel" is an extension of
her visual arts creative nature. A combo of sensual
vocals and hot tune this particular song is sure to gain
much attention. Great dance tunes. Hit the floor Jack!

A great and expressive
voice, her album is pop rock, melodic, aggressive, a music and visual
artist...
Interprete
visionaria, un fare da volpina, una grande ed espressiva voce...il suo è un pop rock
sospirato, melodico, aggressivo...artista musicale e visiva. Gilli
struttura musicale e sonora che oltrepassa i confini finora conosciuti e che
piacerebbe, senz'altro, a Patty Smith e ai Sonic Youth. Un cd che lancia
potenti messaggi, gilli moon è una naturale
cantastorie che esprime grande personalità e emozioni a volte delicate, a
volte crude.

THE INTERVIEW
FEMALE MUSICIAN
Raised in Australia's bush, where she taught herself music under candlelight
and solar energy, one can say that gilli moon is a warrior. Singing of both
angels and devils, this young woman is an intriguing mix of innocence and
knowing. Her latest CD, "Temperamental Angel" accosts the
listener with the spoken word piece, "Communication." Here gilli
speaks of the complexities of the human spirit. "My music and art express
the uninhibited me," says moon. With that in mind, gilli chants,
"Ease yourself into my shape," over a snaky bass groove on the
super sexy "Naked". Closing the CD is "Alive", an introspective song with shades of Kate Bush. gilli moon is
a truly independent artist. She writes and produces her own music and
distributes it online and in selected retail outlets. Gilli is also
instrumental in the Los Angeles songwriters association,
Songsalive!.
Her website is informative, artistic, and professional looking. For more on this versatile artist, go

COLLECTED SOUNDS, Sweden
gilli moon's second album opens with a spoken word piece that's reminiscent of
Laurie Anderson. Then the rest of the record unfolds and reveals itself to be a
unique mix of accessible hooks, passionate vocals and heartfelt lyrics. Moon
effectively captures
a variety of moods with her music. The title track has its
fair share of Alanis Morrissette's explosive nature. By contrast the ballad
"Why Do you Love Me Still?" is tender and sweet and should top the
lists in a fair universe. She's an intriguing new voice to listen out for.-Anna Maria Stjärnell

REVIEWS

THE
FEMALE MUSICIAN
The
album "Girl in the Moon" is the perfect blend of charisma and
passion. Featured on the CD is "Didgeridoo Dreaming", which is full
of lush synthesizers and pulsating bass and percussion. The song
"Walk Away" is a bittersweet breakup ballad that contains the
phrase, "I crashed down to the ocean floor- my mistake". gilli
isn't always introspective however. Taking a funky turn, "I Believe
in Love" shows off gilli's sensuous voice. gilli moon
was born in Milan,
Italy, but grew up in Australia. At age five she took up classical
piano, and by fifteen, she was on her way to becoming an accomplished
songwriter. gilli's songs have been featured worldwide in TV, film, and
theatre. She is now based in L.A., where she was acknowledged as one of
the Top Unsigned Artists of Southern California. Check out gilli's mp3
site at

ROB STEINER
STAR NEWSPAPER,
POP STOPS, CHICAGO
"Girl in the Moon", with its sinuous bassline and
exotically crooned chorus ("the girl in the moon/she's fallen in love/the
girl in the moon/coming out of the dark/the girl in the moon/has captured your
heart") captured my ear... Girl in the Moon is a sleek, sensuous
album that serves as a great showcase for what may well be the "next big
thing".

AUSTRALIAN GUILD OF SCREEN COMPOSERS
"I just received your Girl in the Moon.. I’m happy to say that your CD is one of
those CDs that I just keep listening to all day, every day. It’s very catchy.
I decided that the reason I enjoy listening to it so much right away is because
the vocals have such great passion. All the best for the future, Jim Walsh
(April ‘99)"
